In this workshop you will learn the basics of the bow drill style of fire making and have the opportunity to make your own kit to take home. You will be shown the steps and positions necessary to master making your own coal and then how to turn your coal into flame. The bow drill has been a tool for humanity since the 5th century BC where the earliest examples were found in western Pakistan and the Indus Valley. The ability to make and use fire is particular to the Human species here on Earth. It has warmed our homes, helped to cook our meals and provide security since time immemorial. Being able to summon this element through the use of wood, stone and skin is a primal and inherently satisfying endeavor. Please join us for this fascinating journey back to our roots and deepen your sense of what it is to be human. Fire making knowledge will inevitably lead you down a long, dignified road through human history and help you forge a more divine connection with the natural world. Materials, which have all been collected locally, will be provided. This class will be the first in a series of primitive skills workshops and field trips.
